SCOUTING FOR CHANGE: AN IMPOSSIBLE DREAM WORTH PURSUING

Before I start, Allow me to first share this lessons I had ....here's an excerpt from Dough Johnson's Lessons of Change.

You can't mandate what matters.
Change is a journey, not a blueprint.
Problems are our friends.
Vision and strategic planning come later in the process, not at the beginning.
Individualism and collectivism must have equal power.
Neither centralism nor de-centralism works.
Connect with the environment.
Every person needs to be his or her own change agent

Only a deaf would not hear the thunderous cry for change echoing in all corners of our world, a world devastated not just by natural calamities but more so, of ceaseless human wickedness -greed for power, lust for fame and endless worship for money. In the quest for change, one small group can often and really most of the time, find its self in the midst of wolves hungry to slay their pray.

CHANGE is a very old battle-cry, probably much older than NOAH and it has been there since time immemorial, inevitably, those who look-up to the future will have no choice but to be that sheep in the midst of these wolves.

The scouting movement humbles itself to be one of the shepherds inclined to guide the herd of young men who are bound to continuously cry for the doctrines of an endless process called CHANGE. Not known to all, scouting teaches these young men the virtues of a Knight-bound to serve others. We blaze their minds with life knowledge and kindle their hearts with hopes and aspirations for them to move forward and not become part of the problem and rather be a part of the solution. Not known to all, Scouting does not only evolve in the boundaries of childhood fun, of songs, of yells and outdoor life. Scouting, decries complacency and promotes the persistent quest for self development using the old “Learning-by-doing process”, our classroom-the outdoor, our campus-the society, our education is for LIFE. Scouting serves the young ones to catalyze change, with the undying hope to deploy a small group of young envisioned youth who are upbeat, responsible and positive enough to become the change that this world need. We might even fail (as many does), but scouting will pursue its course nonetheless, and will carry on with its journey until the “change” it has been longing for is at hand.

Some of the changes I personally want….and so the changes I preached to my scouts

1. For us, MANKIND to learn to love NATURE the way we love LIFE.

2. For us, MANKIND to learn to respect others the way we want to be respected.

3. For us, MANKIND to learn to be ACCOUNTABLE to each and everything we do, even without anybody looking.

4. For us, MANKIND to strengthen our faith to God.

5. And for us, MANKIND to LIVE life with LOVE and HARMONY..

I may sound so optimistic, sound so hypocrite, or may even sound like a little voice in the wilderness- but soon, this voice echoed by these young men, and soon it will be heard.. As it goes in Sen. Gordon’s famous slogan “what this country needs is not just a change of men, but a change in men”. We will soon get the change we want. This may even appear as an Impossible Dream, but this is an Impossible Dream worth pursuing for.

A VERY SUCCESSFUL JAMBORETTE 2008

A total of 654 Scouts, 160 registered adult scouters, and about a few hundreds of visiting guests, parents and educators from all corners of Olongapo City, completing the camp population (which is estimated at about a thousand) who participated in the recently concluded 2008 Council Eco-Jamborette held at the City’s very own Halfmoon Beach from Nov. 6-9, 2008.

The Jamborette turned-out to be a very successful one considering that each and every participants went home HAPPY, SATISFIED and STILL LONGING FOR MORE! No casualty from any activity were reported except for some scouts who needed to be given an extra medical attention due to their reaction to the heat of the sun.

This was made possible by the full support given by no less than the City Mayor who served as the Camp Chief, Hon. Edwin Piano the Deputy Camp Chief for Admin, Mr. Gregorio M. Elane the Deputy Camp Chief for the Advisory Group, with him is the whole Local council Executive board, the DepEd family headed by Dr. Ligaya B. Monato and the local barangay unit headed by Hon. Jess Federico. Among the special guests, aside from the City Mayor Bong Gordon, Jr., were Mr. Ramon Lacabain, II (former vice Governor), Hon. Jess Federico, Brgy. Chairman of Brgy. Kalaklan, Mrs. Namnama Roque (Division Scout Coordinator) and William P. Chavez, Regional Scout director for NCR/CLR.

The Jamborette received an overwhelming support from some groups like the APO fraternity, Subic Tambuli Lions Club, the Youth Network for Environmental Advocates (YNEA), the Philippine National Police (PNP) Philippine National Red Cross-Olongapo, the James L. Gordon Memorial Hospital, Olongapo City Health Office, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, The City Agriculture's Office, the Public Utilities Department, the Disaster Management Office, the Engineering Department, the Environmental Sanitation and Management Office (ESMO), the Public Affairs Office and the Olongapo Mahal ko Foundation.

All these positive output are intended to boost more scouting participation for the months and years to come.

Onwards to QUALITY SCOUTING, ONWARD to more SCOUT INVOLVEMENT and and a more RELEVANT and TIMELY PROGRAMS for the youth!

MT. PINATUBO TREK....BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!!!

(for those who missed the ADVENTURE, duh, just like ME.....Eat your hearts out and wait for the SECOND INVITATION THIS MAY 2008!!!)

The Mount Pinatubo is now a remarkable tourist spot in the Philippines after its explosion in June 1991. This historic landscape is famous around the cities and towns that surrounds it. As history said, it dumped billions of tons of volcanic debris on three provinces, erasing entire farm communities and altering the world's climate. Pinatubo's eruptions were so massive that its top was simply blown away, reducing its height by 300 meters. Rainwater formed a crater lake. During the rainy season, roughly from June to about October, climbing is forbidden as the volcanic debris on its slopes and in river channels become deadly avalanches. Since Pinatubo is classed as one of the country's 22 active volcanoes.

Mount Pinatubo trekking offers a once in a life time experience of the bizarre canyons it has formed just like those in the primitive age. Spectacular lahar formations beyond imagination giving any individual the idea how the earth was formed. It is also famous of the sugar cane wine that is made from the finest sugar cane. The sulfur produced in the water streams ae used in hot spring as treatment to malignant skin disease and it cleanses skin.

The exciting challenge was courageously faced by the following brave young men: Sctr. Don Enrico Concepcion, Outfit Advisor, Outfit No. 88 sponsored by Rotary Club of Metro Olongapo and some of its member, Sct. Patrick Gabrito, Sct. Francis Mayor, Sct. Jhionne Maniago with the cooperation of ES Cherlowe Reinard T. Ramirez to represent CSE Mario Esquillo of James L. Gordon Council due to his strict schedule in the celebration of the Philippine Olympic Festival 2008. Our trek started when we ride the victory liner bus to Layac, Bataan. After that, we wait for the Genesis bus to Capaz, Tarlac. When we arrive at the CALTEX in the Baguio-Luisita-Concepcion intersection. First we had our delicious and energizing breakfast to prepare for yet another travel and walk. We ask for directions from some local residence. Next, we entered Brgy. Sto. Rosario and rode a common jeep to Sta. Juliana which took approximately an hour. A 4x4 jeep service is already waiting for us (contacted by Sir Don) which took us to the Pinatubo Spa Town main office. We shortly look around the spa town and took some pictures. After paying the registration fee for the 4x4 trekking service, Skyway fee and conservation fee. Then we start our trip to Pinatubo crater. It is a rough terrain in our way to Pinatubo. It is full of mud and dust and a very long rough-terrain roler coster ride. As we toss and turn in the 4x4 service, we have seen the beautiful scenery on our way to Pinatubo and as usual took some pictures as souvenir. We have seen a lot of mountains and carabaos taking a bath… oops! Enough about that, we have entered to the Skyway which is a rough road. It took us 1 hour 4x4 riding then we arrived at last. We took our bags and start to hike our way to Pinatubo crater. . ITS TIME TO WALK. It was a very rocky and slippery way down. Afterwards, we have seen the layers of the ashes. Again, we continue our hike with our tour guide. On our way, we’ve seen brook with some color like Cheese whiz. Sctr. Don Concepcion said that it is sulfur that is in the brook. After that great scenery of the Philippine version of Grand Canyon, we came to see a scenery of green mountains. It is very hard in hiking our way to the crater. Next, we came to the stairs with railings up to the crater. Finally, we have reached our goal. We were amazed and astonished of the great view of the Pinatubo crater. There we stop for lunch break. After that sumptuous lunch, we took advantage in taking pictures of the great view. Sctr. Don Concepcion recalled the outdoor code in us before we come near the crater, “Take nothing but pictures, Leave nothing but footprints, Kill nothing but time”. It is my unforgettable memories this 2008 with the emerald color water which is 2.5km round in crater. We changed our clothes and go all the way down the crater. The water was very cold suiting for the long hot hiking. Again, Picture Picture!

After that we changed our clothes and ready for another hike back. It took us approximately one hour in the hike. In my watch we start hiking back exactly 1PM. On our way back we got some souvenirs like rocks and water from the brook. It was tiring on our way back. Then again, we rode the 4x4 service. Finally, we arrived at the Pinatubo spa town and pay a visit to the information desk. Then we waved goodbye to Mt. Pinatubo. Again the same trip back to Olongapo City, our home sweet home. When I arrived at home, I felt tired, exhausted and hungry. I ate my dinner and have a peaceful rest while watching the TV. Then I saw on channel 2 ABS-CBN in the show TRIP NA TRIP, their trek to Pinatubo which was just what we did this morning, except the spa treatment due to insufficient budget. What a coincidence! I think it is just our destiny to journey and trek the Mount Pinatubo Challenge.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
FOOTWEAR is very essential in this hiking so better wear strong but used and comfortably shoes which can survived the rough terrain. Never wear slippers except if you can possibly do it as we have done it. Consider also the socks.
Be careful in riding the 4x4 service. You might rip your pants……!
Always check your things while you ride the 4x4 on rough road. You never know what might happen to your things.
Bring only light pack and bring enough water that is not so heavy to carry.
Never eat while hiking and drink moderately….!
Don’t forget to bring extra clothes and underwear in this trek; it will be very handy in your KULITAN activities!!!
Take care of your footwear please…!

ANG MO KIO DISTRICT to SPEND A WEEK IN SUBIC

The Ang Mo Kio District of the Singapore Scout Association, through the initiative of Sctr. Marcos N. Soriano, Sr. (District Leader), is planning to visit the James L. Gordon Council and conduct JOINT activities from May 26-31, 2008. The small contingent will be composed of 60 participants (Adult Leaders and Young Scouts).

According to Sctr. Soriano the group's objective are as follow:

1. Establish links with the James L. Gordon Council Scouts and Scouters.
2. Explore Olongapo City, the Subic Bay Freeport and Undergo
Jungle Environment Survival Training.
3. Explore Mount Pinatubo.
4. Carry out a service project that would benefit the indigents in Olongapo City.

Recently, Sctr. Soriano, Sr. and his son Marcos, Jr. visited the council last December 2007 during the Council Jamborette held at Columban College, Barretto, Olongapo City and had a friendship dinner with some of the council officers. Present during the dinner are the following:

12 EAGLE SCOUTS CANDIDATES TO TAKE THE

NATIONAL BOARD OF REVIEW

After more than 24 months of advancement process and years of scouting (unrecorded) activities. Twelve (12) names emerged as final candidates for the National Board of Review for Eagle Scout Rank this March 14, 2008.

Boy scout saves Maldives president’s life

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka -- A Maldivian boy scout foiled an assassination attempt on the leader of his tiny nation, grabbing an attacker's knife as the man jumped out of a crowd of well-wishers and lunged at President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, a government official said.

Gayoom was unhurt in Tuesday's incident, but his shirt was ripped as the attacker tried a second time to stab him before being overpowered by security guards, government spokesman Mohammed Shareef said.

"One brave boy saved the president's life," he said.

Shareef, speaking by telephone from the Maldives' capital, Male, did not identify a suspect but said the assassination attempt may have had a "political motive." Opposition to Gayoom's three-decade rule has grown in recent years and there have also been reports of increased Islamic militancy in the Muslim nation.

Later Tuesday, government lawmaker Ibrahim Shareef was assaulted by four unidentified men in Male and sustained minor injuries, the government spokesman said Wednesday.

The lawmaker was a founder of the opposition Maldives Democratic Party but recently pledged allegiance to Gayoom, he said. He did not comment on the motive for the assault or those responsible.

The attack on Gayoom occurred soon after he arrived at the Hoarafushi islet, one of the 1,190 coral islands that make up the Indian Ocean nation.

The attacker hid a knife in the Maldivian flag as he awaited the president's arrival, Shareef said.

As Gayoom greeted the crowd, the man lunged at his stomach, but 15-year-old Mohammed Jaisham Ibrahim, wearing his blue Maldives Boy Scout uniform with a blue kerchief around his neck, reached out and grabbed the blade, according to the government.

The teenager was flown to Male for medical treatment, Shareef said. He was reportedly injured on his hands.

After the attack, Gayoom addressed the nation in a radio broadcast, thanking the teenager and calling for calm, according to the Web site of the Minivan newspaper.

Gayoom, 70, has ruled the Maldives since 1978 and helped turn it into a major destination for tourists seeking a quiet vacation on virgin beaches surrounded by crystal blue waters.

However, the country of 350,000 people has also had its share of turmoil in recent months.

On September 29, a homemade bomb blamed on Islamic militants exploded in a park in the capital, Male, wounding 12 tourists. A week later, police and soldiers raided an island that was a reputed insurgent stronghold, sparking a battle with masked men armed with clubs and fishing spears that wounded more than 30 security officers.

Gayoom has also faced opposition protests to his previously unchallenged rule in recent years. Under the pressure, he legalized opposition parties and agreed to hold the nation's first truly democratic election later this year.

The New Maldives Movement, a new opposition coalition formed to challenge Gayoom in the elections, condemned the attempted assassination.

Governance Camp for Emerging Anti-Corruption Scout Crusaders Kicks-off

James L. Gordon Council- An active Paricipating Council

It's all set, 52 Scouts from all over Luzon emerged as successful participants to the forthcoming Governance Camp for Emerging Anti-Corruption Scout Crusaders this July 8-13, 2007 at the Phil. Scouting Center for the Asia Pacific Region, Mt, Makiling, Los Banos Laguna, 3 of them are from James L. Gordon Council.

The Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts of the Philippines Association (TOBSPA) headed by their chairman Redempto Parafina (of GWatch);through the support of the PARTNERSHIP FOR TRANSPARENCY FUND and with close coordination with the BSP National Office; packed all the necessary needs to put the final touches together for the 6-days camp. (TOBSPA is the association of former awardees of the prestigious Ten Outstanding BSP search which started in 1989).

The stage of gathering the potential scouts for interview and selecting the best among them was over and done, now the GovCamp team will be implimenting the module which was designed to impart the Key concepts and principles on corruption, governance and transparency, methodoloogies and strategies for transparency work and other resources to develop Scout Leaders into transparency cadres. The 6-day camp will seek not only to educate, but more so to inspire and encourage the scout participants to launch their own transparency initiatives in their own respective communities. The good part about this project is the unique opportunity for each scout to attend this camp ABSOLUTELY FREE.

Scout. Kenny Ralph Fernando, Scout Julius Ceasar Gomez both of Columban College-HS Main, and Scout Angel John Dumlao of OCNHS-SSC TOBSPA will be representing the Council during the weeklong camp, they will be joined by Scout Ramir Ronquillo (OWS-HS) as observer. To even paint the picture clearer, TOBSPA also appointed Mr. Mario Esquillo, the James L. Gordon Council Scout Executive (OIC) who also happens to be a TOBS awardee himself for the year 1994) to serve as Camp Director to orchistrate the whole camp activity.

Soft night winds bring a bit of chill to the skin yet, nobody really cares. There is warmth from burning logs, cracking as it tumbles down, sending thousands of fiery dust upwards propelled by the breeze. Forest night creatures sing their song, competing and badly losing to a Boy Scout Troop campfire. Forming a loose circle, the boys with their patrol flags slowly waving from the soft breeze, sit on the soft grass while listening to the man we admiringly called, "Sir Frank." No, this is not medieval times, nor was this man knighted by the Queen of England. He is about five feet and six inches tall, close to one hundred forty pounds with an erect posture. Even from a distance, the scouts know him right away, short clipped graying hair, steady stride, soft spoken nasal voice, and an ever smiling face. He is a familiar sight.

A successful travel business office owner, a former soldier during World War II, Sir Frank is the president of the Olongapo City Boy Scout Council and a father figure to hundreds of elementary and high school Boys Scouts like me. Oh yes, there are many other outstanding, dedicated men and women like, Sir Max, Sir Eli, Mr. and Mrs. Matias, Mr. and Mrs. Mendigorin, Mr. Bautista, and many others. But to the young scouts, Sir Frank is different. During times, when heroes are Superman, Batman and other comic characters, boys knew champions with names like, Sir Baden-Powell, Boyce, Daza, Nerick. While these admirable men were undeniable icons, we never met them, let alone spoke to them. To us, Sir Frank is very real.

The summer wind gust by, unfurling patrol flags, exposing animal silhouettes that designate the names of the group. Colorful ribbons adorn the flags signifying awards won through competitions. Five groups of boys among friends, twenty eight scouts having fun, learning together, and at this moment, quietly watching the man. He is recounting a story of a mother's last letter from her soldier son about war experiences and of Boy Scouting. As he stands inside a circle of boys and flags, wearing that distinctive khaki boy scout uniform; green neckerchief around the collar held by a leather slide called a wobble, neatly pressed short sleeve shirt with multitude of colorful patches, short pants that stop at exactly four inches from the knee, long cotton green socks with bright green tabs and a pair of shiny low cut black oxford leather shoes, one can clearly see a poster portrait of a leader. Watching him stand and pace around as he narrates the story makes me wonder what it is like to march with him through the jungle of Bataan and Zambales during the fight against the Japanese. Though he never tells us his personal war story, we know his exploits through his son, David, one of my best friends. This humbleness strikes deep down to many boys, unlike some of our leaders that we can pry their war story and be amazed and thrilled, Sir Frank never relates a single incident to us! He just smiles or chuckles here and there, while others tell their story.

As the Scoutmaster gestures as if he is opening the letter from the soldier, my mind is trying to accomplish two things, one is to listen to the story while the other half is asking, how many lives has he saved or how many enemies has he taken. The War Plan Orange B of General Douglas MacArthur called for delaying Japanese through a series of defensible lines so that the bulk of Filipino-American forces could withdraw into Bataan Peninsula . He was part of those forces, the hands that are mimicking the opening of envelop are the same hands that went through the futile battles against overwhelming odds and horror of the infamous Death March that followed after the surrender of the United States Army Forces-Far East. Those wrinkled, bony but strong hands are the same hands that gladly reached out and firmly shook my own when this boy received the highest rank of Boy Scouts of the Philippines . That was a momentous occasion! That was a privilege.

Discharged with the rank of Major in the Infantry after the war, he became a successful businessman. As the United States Navy is the prime employer of the city, he clearly saw the need of a travel agency and founded his firm. To me and many other boys, this foresight is beyond our imagination and simply put, beyond our care, we are just thankful for Sir Frank's wisdom which gave us a chance to improve our selves through the Scouting Movement. One could only guess how many lives were changed for better because of his wisdom and vision.

Fire is still dancing through the mild breeze while stacked black burnt out logs crashes down, sending again flurries of lighted embers spiraling towards the dark sky. A fascinating scene that lasts only for a heart beat. Unlike the lighted embers of campfires that momentarily light up the black, chilly night, only to disappear in a flash, this wonderful man will remain in my heart forever. Sir Frank Malicsi, the Scoutmaster and my hero.

Baguio Boy Scouts join jamboree in UK

BAGUIO CITY: Two Boy Scouts from Baguio will join the Philippine delegation to the 21st World Scout Jamboree in Hylands Park, Chelmsford, England, from July 27 to August 8.

Christopher John Daoey, 14, and Edward F. Pedro, 15, both of the Easter College School, are ready to join some 40,000 people from nearly every nation from seven continents in the biggest scouts’ gathering.

The 21st World Scout Jamboree under the theme “One World One Promise” coincides with the centennial of the founding of Scouting on Brownsea Island. The first World Scout Jamboree took place in England in 1920.

“I was surprised when I was informed that I will be part of the World Scout Jamboree and it’s really an honor to represent the city and the country,” said Daoey.

Pedro, for his part, said he was also not expecting the announcement but said he is prepared to share the experiences of the Philippine Boy Scouts. “We will do our best there,” he said.

Daoey and Pedro were among the Boy Scouts who joined in the cleaning of some 20 familiar landmarks and busts of personalities who made great contributions to the city.

The clean-up campaign is a joint effort between the Baguio Centennial Commission and the Boy Scout of the Philippines-Baguio Chapter.

The two scouts are encouraging other young boys to join the BSP, saying that it is one of the best training grounds for leadership and becoming responsible citizens.

Both scouts expressed concern for the growing number of young people involved in juvenile offenses, which they claimed could have been avoided if they were members of the BSP or any other civic-oriented youth groups.

Over 46,000 boy scouts from the 216 countries which have a Scout Movement recognition (as member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement) will be camping for the event, with many others attending for day visits.

The World Scout Jamboree is the largest regular event organized by the Scout Movement. It takes place every four years in a different country. It is above all an educational event to promote peace and understanding among young people all over the world.

This nation of poor people, a nation of abused society and neglected masses is still, as it was 27 years ago....(after that world celebrated EDSA 1) is still a nation of hungry masses.
Now and again, barely a month from today, an election is again set to burn the hopes and aspirations of our brothers and sisters... promises left and right, tons of garbages thrown against each other's faces, tsk, tsk, tsk...propagandas aired to boost one's popularity while destroying the other's credibility.... damn are we?

NAKAKASAWA NA DI BA? but have we any choice? none at all. All we can hope for is for God to intervene and send us the right leader for us. All we can do is Close our eyes and pick that Pen and line in that JURASIC voting precinct, the same old manually operated election system and simply rely in the hopes that what would come out will be the CLEAN AND HONEST result.... and more so, the highest hope that the winner would be a leader for the masses who would put the greater Good in his shoulder and our future in his heart...

Our mission is simple, to let our own small voices be heard this May 14, and let our sentements be counted. No matter what, it is our only way of taking part in shaping this nation. Lets VOTE no matter what, Lets Choose with our heart and let's vote with our conscience and think not of ourselves, together let us put this election in our hearts because if we dont, one day we will just wake-up asking ouserlves, SAAN na TAYO PUPUNTA???

TOBSPA PUSHES FOR AN ANTI-CORRUPTION CAMP

Grant from Partnership for Transparency Fund (PTF) amounting to $19,660 or almost P950,000 released,

THE TEN OUTSTANDING BOY SCOUTS OF THE PHILIPPINES ASSOCIATIONS (TOBSPA) is currently pushing for the conduct of a Governance Camp for emerging Anti-Corruption Scout Crusaders on July 10-15, 2007 Rizal Re-Creation Center Arban Street, Rizal Laguna (Dates and Venue is still tentative). Another milestone in Philippine Scouting.

The pilot project which is expected to gather some 50 Scouts who are potential leaders in their own localities/councils coming from selected areas from Luzon. The Camp will be using a module designed to impart the Key concepts and principles on corruption, governance and transparency, methodoloogies and strategies for transparency work and other resources to develop Scout Leaders into transparency cadres. The 6-day camp will seek not only to educate, but more so to inspire and encourage the scout participants to launch their own transparency initiatives in their own respective communities. The good part about this project is the unique opportunity for each scout to attend the camp ABSOLUTELY FREE plus the chance to avail of the needed budget to implement their plans in their own council.

This mega project was made possible by the effort and prowess of TOBSPA's incumbent chairman Mr. Don Parafina (also of Gwatch) who wasted no time to extend the group's horizon farther. His effort bore fruit when a the grant from the Partnership for Transparency Fund (PTF) amounting to $19,660 or almost P950,000 was approved and released sometime last January of this year. This development resulted into another leap for TOBSPA who at present is holding an office at the BSP National Headquarters after Secretary General J.Rizal Pangilinan gave his all-out support for the project.

As a show of serious focus, the organization hired their fellow TOBSPA members, who are all professionals, such as Joseph Lumanog as Project Officer to handle the technical and overall preparation and implementation of the project for nine (9) months, Jerome Ilagan (former TOBSPA Chair) was also tapped as Consultant for GovCamp Module, Yasser Sarona as consultant for GovCamp Hike, and Hernan Barce as Administrative Assistant. Also a part of the GovCamp Team are TOBSPA's pride to include Christian Lauron, Eddie Paul Saquilayan , Kervin Go, Mario Esquillo, and Joshua Young.

Inspired by the ideals of scouting, the team is expected to make another mark in BSP's very remarkable line of notable projects. (More details soon...)

JAMES L. GORDON COUNCIL 2ND SUMMER LEADERSHIP CAMP KICKS-OFF

Now on its 2nd year, the James L. Gordon Council's Summer Leadership Academy and Advancement Camp kicked-off last April 2, 2007 at Tapinac Elementary School, Olongapo City.

Aimed at providing quality training and worthwhile summer activity for the scouts, the council enjoined some of the products of its first summer camp last year (Compose of 10 Eagle Scouts, and some 15 first class, second class, outdoorsman and venturer scouts) to pass-on their knowledge to the new ones.

The training will last until May 3, 2007 and will have 4 phases (Basic Skills and knowledge, Outdoor Life, Community Immersion and the 3-days/2-nights Final Phase Camp and Graduation. A total of 32 graduates out of 72 registered trainees were able to finish the training last year. At the start of the 2nd batch this April 2, a total of 5 high schools, and 5 schools converged to complete the 87 boys (including the officers and counselors) have registered for the program. Among the exciting part of the activity includes the Trip to Mt. Samat and overnight camp in Corregidor Island, Public Speaking Seminar and the Community Immersion part. TARLAC CITY- Namayagpag ang pangalan ng James L. Gordon Council sa natapos na National Scouts Youth Forum para sa Luzon na ginanap kamakailan lang sa Asiaten Hotel, Tarlac City noong 23-25 ng Marso taong kasalukuyan. Ito ay matapos maihalal na kinatawan ng buong Luzon sa National Executive Board si Scout Kenny Ralph S. Fernando ng Columban College, High School Dept. Main. Ang halalan ay naganap sa huling araw ng plenaryo noong ika-25 ng Marso. Ang pagkakahalal kay Sct. Fernando ay ang kaunaunahang pagkakataon para sa James L. Gordon Council at maging nang Central Luzon Region na mahawakan ang isa sa tatlong puwesto sa National Executive Board na linalaan sa mga kabataang scout. Ang nasabing puwesto ay madalas na hawak ng Southern Tagalog at National Capital Region.

Una nito ay nahalal na bilang kinatawan ng Rehiyon (Central Luzon) si sct. Fernando sa nakaraan na magkasanib na Regional Youth Forum ng NCR at CLR na ginanap naman sa Valenzuela City. Siya rin ay unang nahirang bilang steering committee chairman ng naturang plenaryo. Dumalo rin sa nasabing pagtitipon na pang rehiyon sila Sct. Julius Ceasar Gomez (Columban), Sct. Alvin Amarille (Columban), Sct. James Nunez (Olongapo Wesley) kasama si Mario Esquillo (Scout Executive) at Alberto Baviera (Program Commissioner). Maliban kay Nunez, ang tatlong scout na nabanggit ay pawang mga produkto ng unang Council Leadership Acedemy na isinagawa noong Abril ng taong 2006.

Ang National at Regional Youth Forum ay taunang isinasagawa upang mabigyan ang mga kabataan na ipahayag ang kanilang mga saluubin kaugnay sa mga kaganapan, usapin at mga bagay-bagay sa paligid na nakakaapekto sa kanila direkta man o hindi. Ang plenaryo rin ang siyang nagsisilbing midyum para maging bahagi sa policy making process ang mga kabataang scouts. Sa pamamagitan ng mga resolusyong ipinapasa, naitatawid ng mga representating kabataan sa mas mataas pang libel ang kanilang boses.

Sa kaugnay na kaganapan, nakuha naman ng James L. Gordon Council ang tatlo sa mga posisyung pang rehiyon sa Central Luzon sa katauhan ni Hon. James Gordon, Jr. Regional 2nd Vice-Chairman, Mr. Ernesto Asuncion, Regional Auditor, at Mr. Alberto C. Baviera, Jr. Regional Program Commissioner. Ginanap ang halalan sa DepEd Conference Hall sa Balanga Bataan noong ika-15 ng Marso taong kasalukuyan.

James L. Gordon Council Attended the National Rover Camp (March 9-11) and the Handover Ceremony of the Asia Pacific Rover Peace Baton (March 10). Among the most memorable experiences is the Rover Vigil and Investiture Ceremony held at PNU Gym, from 6:00PM to 2:00AM (March 9-10). Newly inducted Rovers of the JLG/YMCA-GBC includes Angela Esquillo and Michael Beronio together with the Chairperson for Community Scouting Kenneth Guy Salvatus. The second thing is the attendance of the scouts from Olongapo Wesley School headed by their Troop Leader Mr. Leo Taduran. The Handover Ceremonies was attended by thousands of scouts from all over the country and some heads and representatives of Scouts Associations from the Asia Pacific Region. The BSP President Mayor Jejomar Binay was also present during the event to officially represent our country for the much awaited culmination of the Rover Peace Baton's 7-month old travel around the 23 member countries of the Asia PAcific Region.

OIC Mario Esquillo initiated the contact with email sent to different scout organizations around the Asia Pacific, some made their response including "MAK" our new found friend from Troop 1 of Fuchu, Tokyo Japan (Asst. Sct. Master) and who also happens to be the President of JUZEN Taxi Cab. Corp., a member of Japan Junior Chamber Inc. and of Japan Transportation and Welfare.

"Mak" made a promise to continue communicating with our council and hopefully comeback soon with his young scouts for a joint inter-cultural activity. Most probably, in our next Council Urban Jamborette on October 2007.

Thailand Scouts Association Visits James L. Gordon Council to Deliver Peace

It was an all Scouts Morning last Feb.2, 2007 at the Olongapo City Convention Center as the Thailand Scouts Association headed by the Secretary General Mr. Boonrat Wongyai, visited the James L. Gordon Council to deliver the Asia Pacific Rover Peace Baton.

Proud of the City's achievement, Mayor James Gordon delivered his words of acceptance saying that Olongapo City has been and will always be a protector of peace, proof of which are the consistent national and international nominations and awards which the city has received year after year including the coveted Peace and Order award from the DILG, the National Award for BEST Lupong Tagapamayapa and the UNESCO award for Peace. "The City of Olongapo will continue to promote and protect peace as the people and the leaders of this city will continue fighting for excellence" Mayor Gordon added.

The event which was attended by some National Officials of the BSP headed by Mr. Expedito Eduarte, Director for Field Services of the BSP and some staff, sounded the start of the last leg of the Baton's route, and served as the starting point of its Philippines, Luzon Route. Also present during the said event were Mr. William Chavez, Regional Scout Director for NCR/CLR, Mr. Syd Castillo, Director for Youth Services of the World Scout Bureau -ASPAC, Mr. Johny Genato of Ramon Magsaysay Council, and members of the Local council executive board headed by Mayor James Gordon, Jr., Mr. Gregorio Elane, Hon. Edwin J. Piano, Mr. Gregorio Manglicmot, Mr. Alberto C. Baviera, Jr.Mr. Richard Calimbas, Brgy. Councilor Luth Yanglay, Mr.Kenneth Salvatus and approx. 200 scouts and scouters from the local council including the new Rover Members from the the City's Hanjin Training Center.

The highlight of the event was capped by the hand-over ceremony and the exchange of commitment to continue the promise of strengthening peace in all nations not only in the Asia Pacific Region but more so around the world.
The event was also made colorful with the presence of Olongapo Wesley School's Drum and Lyre Corps. who welcomed all the guests with their lively Mabuhay rendition. A solemn invocation was rendered by Mr. Ronald Manila anddDuring the event, the monotony was broken by the inspiring interpretative number of Model Scouts from Olongapo Wesley School-Elem. Dept. Before the end of the program Mayor Gordon added glitz as he requested all the scouts to stand and dance as he sings the popular Boom Tarat..tarat song which made the venue very much alive. The Thai Scout Leader who's name is Boonrat (Boon is the nickname)was amazed as he watch the crowd singing and dancing along with the local leader.

The significance of the event was even highlighted as Mr. Syd Castillo of the World Scout Bureau narrated the countries which the baton has been since it left Moldives last August 2006. Adding more, the Baton is expected to travel around Luzon until it reach Makati and join the other Baton from Visayas and Luzon. This three Baton will then form one Big Baton which will then be brought to United Kingdom during its celebration of the centenary years of scouting.

Scouts from Columban College-HS, Saint Joseph's College, Barretto High School, Olongapo City National High School, Sergia Soriano Memorial High School, Olongapo City Elementary School, Nellie E. Brown Elementary School, Olongapo City Chirstian School, Olongapo Wesley School (Elementary and High School), Santa Rita Elem. School, Tapinac Elementary School, Banicain Elem, School, Gordon Heights I and II Elem. School, SPED-G Center, and many others were among spectators of the said international peace celebration.

A RESOLUTION OF CONDOLENCES TO THE BEREAVED FAMILY OF SCOUTER MAXIMO GUERRERO VENZON, LT AND RECOGNIZING HIS INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CITY OF OLONGAPO

WHEREAS, Scouter Maximo G. Venzon, LT, one of the prime movers of the Scouting in the City, joined his Creator last December 7, 2006, while attending a jamboree at Clarkfield, Pampanga;

WHEREAS, an educator and master initiator of various leadership trainings in the High School Department of the Columban College, Mr. Venzon had motivated his students to hone multiple skills and instilled in them the values of perseverance, discipline and teamwork – a lifestyle he himself exemplified;

WHEREAS, Max, as he is fondly called, was the beacon and spirit behind the Builders’ Organization, a movement that provides programs and trainings that bring out the leadership potentials of young men and women through the principles of Scouting. The said program enriched countless individuals now creating niches in various career horizons. The pathfinder program as he envisioned it to be, none of the Builders strayed from the fundamentals of rightful living;

WHEREAS, strict and resolute inside the classroom, Mr. Venzon will always be remembered as a great cook who can feed hundreds of students with a minimum budget in camp outs, a trustworthy friend of his co-teachers and a generous brother;

WHEREAS, Scouter Max remained loyal to his mother institution and mother council as attested by his 34 years of service as Columban Scout Coordinator, Olongapo City Private Schools Scout Coordinator, Council Training Commissioner and Chairman of Council Advancement and Activities (1971-2006) and Central Luzon Regional Program Commissioner.

WHEREAS, for many years, Olongapo had claimed awards for the National Search in the Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts of the Philippines. Most of them under the direct tutolege of Mr. Venzon;

WHEREAS, Mr. Venzon died in the line of service and left a legacy of programs and trainings implemented by schools. But most of all, he had written solid and encouraging principles to live by in the hearts of many scouters whom he touched;

NOW, THEREFORE, with the unanimous accord of the Members of Sangguniang Panlungsod present;

RESOLVED, AS IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED, by the Sangguniang Panlungsod in session assembled to condole, as it hereby condoles the bereaved family of Scouter Maximo Guerrero Venzon, LT and recognizing his invaluable contributions to the City of Olongapo.

Let a copy of this Resolution be furnished the bereaved family of Scouter Maximo Guerrero Venzon, LT, for their information and record.
